Youth Theatre Group
Introduction to Film and Theatre
Program developed and taught by: Nada Humsi and Yazan Maarouf
Conception and Origins
Following the success of the Community Dabkeh Group, Levant wanted to create other opportunities for youth to express themselves through different art forms. Introduction to Theater & Film was designed as a workshop for young people from diverse backgrounds to learn the basics of theatre and filmmaking. The workshop was instructed by Nada Humsi, Theatre Artist and Yazan Maarouf, Filmmaker.
Program Outline
The first half of the workshop focused on working with participants to develop the skills and confidence to stand on stage, control their delivery, and project to an audience. They also learned about the difference between acting on stage and acting for the camera.
The workshop’s second half focused on a film’s production side. Participants learned how to write a short story with a clear intention to develop it into a movie and how to plan a day of filming with a high production value.
Insights for the Future
Through the workshops, participants benefited from a safe space to express who they truly were. The classes provided participants with both artistic and communication tools they could use in any setting, from making movies to everyday interactions with others. In class after class, Yazan and Nada saw an apparent increase in participants’ confidence, positively affecting how they presented themselves and expressed their thoughts.
At Levant, we plan to conduct this workshop again and continue building our theatre programming with new ideas. After seeing the incredible results of the Intro to Film and Theatre program, we hope to continue encouraging more promising young actors and filmmakers to pursue their passions with fantastic talent and energy.
